What the Weather Makes You Do

There are some things that just make you cry. Today, it was the weather. The heat was oppressive; the humidty brutal. Lack of sleep the previous sweat-soaked, toss and turn night left me feeling punchy and a little disoriented.

Then the blessed rain began. I hopped in the rental car and headed for the swimming hole; an old rock quarry. After parking the car I climbed over the concrete barrier, glanced at the "no trespassing" sign and followed the sounds of splashing and voices around a gentle downward curve.

I quickly doffed my outer garments and strode into the pond as thunder rumbled ominously overhead. "Great", I thought, "All I want is a swim and I'll probably end up with a case of 'Student struck by lightning'". Luckily, everyone survived the swim.

It has finally cooled off enough so I feel human again. I can now turn to my writing.

We had an introduction session today, going around, saying our names, where we were from, and what we write. When it came to my turn I stood up and announced loudly enough for everyone in the converted barn to hear, "Aloha, my name is Kelly. I'm from Honolulu, Hawaii and I write Science Fiction and Fantasy that sometimes borders on Porn." I sat down as the 130-odd people busted out in laughter and applause. It's not often I get to be the center of attention but, when I am, I milk it for all it's worth!
